ABOUT

The ACCESS Summer Research Institute (SRI) is an intensive ten-week introduction to research methods, with an emphasis on biomedical sciences. Funded by NIH, the goals of the ACCESS program are to increase the numbers and capabilities of under represented scientistin the profession and to prepare students for careers in biomedical research. The scope of this program is to increase transfer rates, graduation rates, and participation in scientific research of diverse groups of community college students.

 

The ACCESS Summer Research Institute is an intensive 10-week introduction to research methods and tools with an emphasis on biomedical sciences. The program focuses on students whose academic goals and potential have been affected by disadvantageous circumstances and/or students who belong to groups with below-average UC enrollment rates.

 

Selected student participants (interns) will work under a UCSC faculty mentor on a project that focuses on their current ongoing-research Interns will work with state of the art laboratory instruments, meet researchers in the biomedical field and experience the academic research environment. Workshops will be given on such topics as library research, oral presentations, writing abstracts, preparing posters, writing resumes, internships, and planning for graduate school in the sciences. SRI Interns work with state-of-the-art laboratory instruments, meet professionals in the biomedical field and experience the academic research environment. Workshops are given on such topics as, (a) lab safety fundamentals, (b) library research, (c) organizing and delivering written and oral presentations, (d) computer/internet resources, (e) cyber security awareness, (f) ethics in science, (g) using computer tools to examine small molecules, (h) exploring the contributions of inspirational scientists, and (i) creating a resume, (CV). Interns will live on campus and experience campus life, where they can establish close friendships with other interns and explore the academic requirements to transfer to UCSC (admissions counseling, academic student support services, financial aid, graduate school, etc.). In addition to living on campus, SRI Interns will receive a stipend of $5,000 and $2,000 or more to cover the cost summer on-campus housing.


Students must be currently enrolled at Cabrillo, Gavilan, Hartnell, or Monterey Peninsula College to be eligible. ACCESS seeks students who are highly motivated and will significantly benefit from participation in the Summer Research Institute. All participants must be US citizens or have appropriate documentation. In order to be eligible, students must be ACCESS members for at least one semester. We can also accomodate DACA individuals.
